boomer politics and the attitudes of today's baby boomers
Boomer politics is something I often wonder about today. Are we more Left, Right, or center? I have a feeling that we are as divided as the country is at present. I am not sure the people of the counter-culture movements were all that political about anything except the hardcore ones. I think the hippies were just looking for a cause, a place and yes sometimes even a joint. I remember a couple of my friends dropping out of school and basicly doing nothing except hitch hikeing around the country. They eventally became drug addicts.
It indeed was a different time, especially during the 1960s and 1970s. How many boomers really played a part in the counter culture movements? I don't think as many as the media depicts.
I have never at any time in my life been anti-America and never will be. I remember the events of
Haight-Ashbury
and the "summer of love". Of course who can forget "the Mamas and Papas" with their hit song "San Francisco". Even though baby bommers are often credited with starting the hippie movement, many of the people who were first involved were much older than any "boomers". The
Politics of the hippies at first was peaceful marching but as the Viet Nam War drug on things got pretty nasty, especially in the anti-war demonstrations.
As for as myself, I was already wearing bell-bottoms because I was in the Navy at the time. Sure I enjoyed the music and I still listen to groups from that era like Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, the Who, The Alman Brothers, The Dobbie Brothers, Fleetwood Mac and Bob Dylan. This was a time of music that will never be matched. It introduced the whole concept of stage and light shows, advancement in musical technology that is an absolute marvel today. It is almost beyond belief to look at the achivements that have been made in technology, automobiles, aircraft, etc in the last 40 years.
Many of Rock groups of the 60s-70s are still recording and touring even today and still packing their shows. Talk about staying power. Of course, sadly, many of the greats like Jimmy Hendrix, and Jim Morrison died of drug overdoses long before their time.
As I look back on that time I don't think the majority of the people looked at it as being political. It was a change from the 50s, which to me was very boreing.
I was more influenced by the music, dress and hair styles than politics. I believe that music is the one thing that we all have in comman and with the advancements in technology you don't have to buy an entire CD to get that one favorite song. This is where I go. Yahoo! Much of the counter culture movement has woven its way into the fabric of not just America but other Countries as well. For the most part, young people began to wear their hair longer and I remember some great clothing styles that developed, especially in the 1970s. If I had to sum it all up, I think some good came from the movements and a lot of bad also. Every where you turn its all about political correctness and most of it I do not agree with.
After the Charles Manson murders the hippie movement basically went south, even though there are still a few communal living places usually in remote parts of the country. By the late 70s it had pretty much diminished except for a few diehards.
However it has bred a new type movement, The Secular Progressives, who have infiltrated our government, our colleges and even public school system. They are primarily hard core intellectuals who held on to their anti-American beliefs and now are teachers and College professors who are teaching our children. Unfortunately these people combined with the left wing media are destroying the very moral foundation of this great country and that saddens me. I am sure that many of you will strongly disagree with my assessment of this and that is your right.

Politics is something that I am very passionate about. I am very angry and disgusted with the politicians on both sides of the
isle, of their promises and lies. The liberals and the ACLU are chipping away at the building blocks of our Constitution. If we don't stop all of this political correctness bulls--t, we are going to end up being a socialist country.
You and I control the process that gets them elected or defeated. We have to be united in order to do it. Please help me keep America from being destroyed.
